Jureeporn Siangsuwan was told by her mom and husband that she often sleep talks. But, what can be seen as something ordinary, can be a little strange in her case. Jureeporn sleep talks in 6 different languages.
Thai, both the southern dialect and standard Thai, English, Dutch, French and German. “Hopefully, I did not give away some secrets”, she told us.
However, her knowledge in language has a reason. Jureeporn was born in Thailand and she grew familiar with different languages from a very young age. “I was born and grew up in a great mix of languages and cultures”, she explained. “My grandparents from the south spoke the local southern dialect while the other side from Bangkok used the standard Thai from the center of the country, English and Chinese to communicate business matters”, she said as she told us a bit more about where she comes from.
“Being multilingual truly enriches my life. It feels like having a magic portal to explore fascinating new worlds. When you understand someone’s language, it enables you to understand people, cultures and ways of thinking on a much deeper level.”
She then learned Dutch when she moved to Belgium, a country that she now considers to be her second home. “When I moved to Belgium in 2000, I started to learn Dutch, not only to build up my professional career but also to enjoy my social life while being in a foreign country”, Jureeporn told us.
Later on, and merely out of her own interest, she also studied French and German.
Above all, Jureeporn loves the beauty of language. “Being multilingual truly enriches my life. It feels like having a magic portal to explore fascinating new worlds. When you understand someone’s language, it enables you to understand people, cultures and ways of thinking on a much deeper level.” — she admitted. So, it was only natural for her to become a professional translator.
Jureeporn started by helping out a few friends but soon she was translating important documents and interpreting conversations. “Upon realizing how satisfying it has been for me to help other people, I eventually decided to start a career as an independent professional interpreter and translator in English, Thai and Dutch”, she then told us.
Whenever she’s not working as a translator or interpreter, Jureeporn likes to read a good book, or design her own line of clothes.
